How come when we buy those bargain used cards at the casino we find the red colors are almost black. The players in my senior’s euchre group can’t seem to tell ‘em apart.. Why is that?
If I had to guess it would be that darker colored reds are easier to spot on the security camera than a light red. So it is easier to spot cheating.
My suggestion is to look for some jumbo index Kem or Copag cards. It’s going to cost about $10, but they last for ages, pure plastic and washable. They sell them on Amazon.com.

One of the most overlooked aspects of winning poker is attitude. Being cocky can lead to great success in poker. Whether you are entering a poker tournament or a cash game you should sit down with the attitude that “I can, I will, and I am going to win!.” Optimism is crucial in anything you want to be successful at in life and especially POKER. Like anything else if you go into it with the wrong pesimistic ideas like “I hope I don’t do too bad, or I want to at least win my money back” you won’t do very well! It is also important to get plenty of rest the night before and get a good meal in you before playing serious poker. This will allow you to sit down at the poker table full of energy, and ready to take on all comers.
Early Stages
At the start of a poker tournament people tend to play very loose seeing a lot of flops with hopes of just getting lucky. They do this simply because the blinds are so inexpensive in the beginning of a tournament. They think well it’s only 50 chips to me. This is the absolute wrong way to start a poker tournament. Lets say the blinds are 25 and 50. If you see 10 flops with marginal hands that is a minimum of 500 chips you will have lost. That’s pretty substantial. I start every tournament as if each poker chip represents one dollar of my own real money. I play solid poker accumulating chips with strong holdings against their limping hands. This allows me to work my way up to the top of the leaderboard pretty easily. The whole time my chip stack is increasing while theirs is dwindling away.
Mid To Late Stages
Right about now you are sitting pretty with enough chips to just sit back and cruise your way into the money. Some people are fine with this, but not us! That’s the same type of poor metallity I discussed in the mental preperation section. All those loose players from earlier are now short stacked. The blinds have gone up with antes added on to each hand now. We need to start putting pressure on the short stacks. Start raising in late position with any 2 reasonable starting hands. This doesn’t mean play 9 2 or 7 3. You should never play hands that weak unless you are in the big blind and everyone limps to you. I would say poker hands like 5 6 or even 7 9 are ok to raise with now though. The short stacks are going to fold 80 percent of the time anyway. The whole time you are still accumulating chips by stealing their blinds and antes. You are collecting protection money for the other 20 percent of the time when they call your raise or push allin. If they do come over the top of you keep in mind the pot odds. If you bet and they raise you your hand is not that weak. If you are getting better than 2 to 1 odds on your money you should make the call! You want to play smart, but eliminate a player every chance you get. My final table advice varies depending on chip stacks and the types of players who I’m playing against. Chances are you will have at least a little knowledge of these players just from being bounced to different tables throughout the poker tournament. Generally I like to play mostly strong starting hands with a few opportunistic bluffs mixed in.
It doesn’t matter if you prefer to play poker online or in a brick and mortar casino. This strategy will make you a better tournament poker player. So get out there and build your bankrolls!

I think for me it may be because at least you loose money slower. But what do you think? Any suggestions on good slot machines?
Heck yea, it’s fun just to play, besides the free drinks, maybe a free buffet/meal and possible future discount/comp room offers..
“lose money slower” > No thank you, I play both to have a great time and to win.
As to the “there are no good slots” >Actually if you know what you’re doing, slots, more specifically video poker can be played with a long term advantage. Of course you have to know how to read a VP pay schedule, know which games to play and the correct strategy for that game. But, that does not mean it “can’t” be done. It most certainly can, if you put in a little effort.
The games to look for
9/6 JOB(99.54%)
10/7 DB(100.2%)
FPDW(100.8%)
JWKOB(100.7%)>RF 4700(101%)
Most VP players start with JOB because it’s fairly easy to learn, and it’s the least volatile. The LV Hilton has 27 nickel 9/6 JOB machines in their sports book. You can play a great game in a very nice casino, drink free & watch sporting events in the greatest sports book on the planet.
VP has the dual advantage of allowing you to play, with a good chance to win. >This also plays to your advantage because you are giving the casino exactly what they want “extended play”. The casinos want you to play for hours. When you give the casinos what they want you will begin to see offers to “come back and see us again”. I prefer to get my rooms free rather than pay hundreds of dollars for them.
When it come to slot machines, the higher the denomination the higher the payback. Nickel slots do not have a very good return, but you can give yourself a better chance to play for a while by playing a game with a smaller jackpot, the larger the jackpot the less frequent the machine is going to pay.
“melissa” is right there are some slot machines that require you to play large numbers of credits to play for the jackpot, I have seen up to 300, it wouldn’t surprise me if there were ones with more. To do what you’re after >play longer/have fun< find nickel machines that have a small jackpot(1,000-5,000) and only requires 3-5 coins Max to play. I know there are some two(coin Max), but I don't know if they have them at the nickel level.
If you set win goals & loss limits for yourself for each session, it will help you walk away with some money in your pocket. The majority of the time I play quarter VP but I'm certainly not above playing nickels(for fun) .I play quarters> for fun, to come out at least even(usually better over my 2 week stays) & for comps(rooms,meals,Etc)..
The way I play is, I break my bankroll up in to sessions per day, I plan to play 4-5 sessions. It might end up being less, sometimes more, sometimes I play longer, sometimes only a few minutes. I have played 18 hours in a day, and somedays, not at all. I will use nickel JOB as an example, I would play $20, which is 400 credits, 400 credits should allow you to play for quite some time, and give you a fair chance to come out ahead.
Where the win goal/loss limit comes in is, well of course if you lose the $20 you take a break, even if it’s only for a few minutes. When you’re winning is where it pays off. You’re playing to “double up” , lets say early on you get hot and are up to $50, if you lose back down to $40 you stop, again, you at least take a few minutes break, hey you won one, smile, celebrate, remember you’re having fun. If on the other hand that $50 turns into $70 or $90 you keep playing while you are winning and stop when you lose back to any double up point $60-$80 etc this assures that you walk away winning. It’s not much fun to have won up to $100 then give it all back. JOB usually does not lend itself to huge wins, but then again “usually” you can play for hours on $20. Anything more than triple would be really good and to win 6-7 times your $20 would be rare(unless you hit a Royal Flush) , a RF pays $200.
I don’t see why a person could not use the same win goal/loss limit while playing slots if they wanted to.
I have a great time, but I have to admit I take it just a bit more serious than most. I have log books for my play. How much goes in, how much comes out, win vs loss, VP played, where I played, slot club points earned, etc .
Whatever you do, use your slot club card, you might just get some surprising offers to come back and play with them again.
Have fun, good luck.
Later: “tshark” is right about Pai Gow Poker, I would have included it myself but you ask about slots and not table games. But, if you want to give a fun, easy game to learn, with a very low house advantage(1.46%) a try Pai Gow Poker is as good as it gets.
Pai Gow Poker – You receive 7 cards & make 2 hands, a 5 card hand & a 2 card hand, the ONLY rule is, the 5 card hand must be better than the 2. To win, you must beat both dealers hands, to lose you must lose both to the dealer(there is one very rare exception). 45% of the hands are pushes because you will split one win each. The dealer can help you “set” your hands, the players or anyone else is actually not supposed to(some casinos enforce this, others are more lax) – be sure and keep your cards over the table –
The Orleans is a great place if you’re interested, they have at least 8 Pai Gow Poker tables and most of them are $5 even on Friday/Saturday night. Palace Station also has some $5 tables. Check the card next to the dealer, before you set down, it will have the table “minimum” – “maximum” bets.
To ask for “checks” >place your money on the table in a non betting area, and ask for “change please”, then if you’re new to the game, tell the dealer you’re trying to learn a new game >it happens many times every day. >I always look for dealers/tables that are having fun<
If you would like to try Craps, the Westin Casuarina has a $1 game during "happy hour">5-10pm weekdays< The Westin is a very nice casino, located 2 blocks East of the strip on Flamingo.
Craps looks complicated, there are between 180 & 200+ bets you can make depending upon the rules. But, there are only 4 good ones, stick with those and you have a great game
Play the pass line
Take the odds
Place the 6 or 8
Craps is a wild, jump up and down & scream a little game, Pai Gow Poker is more, have a drink, socialize and smile when you win kind of game..

In the world of poker, there are almost countless variations to choose from. One only has to find the right game that will suit his way of thinking, and the right techniques to master it, and this will bring him places. Poker indeed became very popular, for it merges chance and strategy together. This is very much important, since in the scheme of things, these two things come hand in hand when dealing with the changes life has to offer. Poker, we can say, puts the game of life on a table, for players to enjoy with.
There are about three categories in poker games. These are the stud games, as exemplified by the 7 card stud, the draw games, as illustrated by the 5 card draw, and the shared hand games, as represented by the Texas Holdem, the most popular poker game nowadays.
Stud games as with the seven card stud poker, have three to ten players that will join in the game. Each of the players will be dealt with two cards placed face down on the table. The third card will be dealt face up. A round of betting will follow. The fourth, fifth and sixth cards are then dealt and placed face up on the table. There will be another bout of betting. The seventh card is then dealt, followed by another round of betting. The player that holds the best cards wins the poker game.
Draw poker, as with the five card draw poker, is played with three to seven players on a table. Five cards will be dealt to them, and a round of betting will occur. The players can opt to put down three cards in exchange for new ones depending on their preferences. Another variation on this is you can exchange up to four cards if you have an ace on your hand. After another round of betting, the player with the best hand wins the game.
Texas Holdem became popular because its rules are extremely easy to know, and playing it comes easy to a beginner. Two cards will be given to a player, followed by another three which is placed face up on the poker table, called the flop. A round of betting will then ensue. Another card placed face up on the table will be dealt to the player, and this is called the turn. Betting will again occur. The final card will be dealt again, this one now called the river. Another bout of betting goes on after the deal. The player will use the first two cards called the hole and any of the three from the table to put together the greatest five card hand. The greatest five card hand wins the game and collects the prizes.
Other variations of poker games can also be played depending on the preferences of the players. All you have to remember is that you have to really master the game, and not let the game become master of you.
