Convert from windows to linux?
I have an old pc that is a P4, 1.8 MHz. My windows disk is broken and windows is getting a little unstable. All I use the machine for is basic stuff like surfing web, instant messaging and basic word processing and light spreadsheet stuff. The games that i play are online games not any graphics intensive stuff. Euchre, and holdem, an solitaire online. Can I put linux on this machine and get programs to do this stuff? Can I take windows completely off? Can I get printer drivers and stuff for linux?
Linux sounds like a great option for you.
Ubuntu comes with Open Office (like Microsoft office), Fire fox (like Windows explorer), and other useful software.
Drivers can usually be found built into the OS or on your printer manufacturer's website. A quick web search should tell you if they exist.
Just be aware, it is not the same as Microsoft's Windows and will take time to get used to. It also requires some computer skills to be able to use it effectively. However after you over come the learning curve it will be easy as pie. Remember to back up your data prior to installing any new OS.
